November Green Waste will only happen if the weather permits
** ALL Green Waste throughout the year will be collected from a container at the curb to be dumped in a compactor. Brush will be piled separately for collection by a different crew to be chipped. Be sure that limbs be no more than 10' long or small enough to be handled by one person. Small Green Waste loose at the curb AFTER spring clean-up will not be picked up. Please remember do not mix animal feces with your green waste. Green waste pickups will continue through November; leaf collection will start when enough leaves have fallen to get crews out and continue for as long as weather permits. Once we have gone by, we can not come back! Please do not put out your green waste material more than 48 hours ahead of the pick-up start date and do not put in the ditches or over drainge. When drainage gets blocked, it may cause flooding or washouts. We have received several complaints complaints about green waste out at the curb for several weeks before green waste pick-up start date. After several years of picking up green waste with out compactor we are still getting questions about loose green waster at the curb. The only time loose green waste is picked up is at spring clean-up time in April. Brush is always picked up loose piled at the curb, brush is defined as tree limbs 1" or larger in diameter. As always, you can bring green waste to the highway garage between pickup dates. Please put green waste grass clippings, leaves in metal or plastic reusable containers for pick-up. Please pile your brush neatly to save the crew time and be efficient.
Trash collections in the spring and fall will occur at two sites for your convenience, the Deerfield Fire House at 5476 Trenton Road and at the Deerfield Highway Garage at 6829 State Route 8. Trash may ALSO be collected throughout the year at the Highway Garage during regular business hours. Please call (315) 826-7014 to ensure that a crew member is available to assist you. As a reminder to all that use the dumpsters at the highway garage, we welcome all town residents to use the site during our normal work hours, however, the town employees come in after a weekend off we find trailer loads of trash dumped in front of the doors marked with NO DUMPING AFTER HOURS signs on the doors. WIth that, they are finding trash in the green waste area and it is not an acceptable place for trash items.
The Highway Department hopes everyone had a great holiday season and everyone is in good health! With winter weather starting early this year, the Highway Department would like to remind everyone as winter continues, please drive with caution; road temperatures are varying and can cause slick spots on the raodways and black ice could occur. As the snow piles up, the Highway Department has a few reminders for everyone...
- Please keep cars off the street during overnight hours, this will helpt the Highway Department clear the streets more efficiently. In May 2009, our town adopted local law # 1-2009 which states that "parked or abandoned vehicles on any public highways in the Town of Deerfield during snowstorms, floods, fires, or other public emergencies can be removed at the owner's expense."
- As winter progresses over the next few months, snow plowed across the road builds up and takes up part of a lane in the road so traffics needs to go around it. PLEASE DO NOT PUSH SNOW ACROSS THE ROADWAY. This could cause an accident, and the person pushing the snow in the road could be held liable if damage occurs.
- Please keep in mind what type of tires you have on your vehicle. All season tires are not the best tires in snow and ice; snow tires work the best in the winter months.
- Please keep trash cans clear of the curb so the plow or snow coming off the plows won't knock them over.
- When winter snowbanks start to get higher, our children like to play in them and dig tunnels. Please remind them how dangerous this can be, as the plow drivers cannot see the kids playing and we would not want to see any of our children get hurt.
The Highway Department hopes everyone had a fun filled summer and enjoyed the nice weather we had this year. An ambititious road contruction season in 2025 has since completed in November. The leaf vacuum worked very well this season, allowing for single person operation which allotted time for other projects and multiple passes within the town. We will be around again in the beginning of spring clean-up to get any leaves that fell late after equipment was stored away for the season.
In 2026, the Department looks forward to these projects...
- Fitting 2026 projects into the highway budget over the next few winter months before the busy season starts
- Splitting construction season again between maintenance and construction.
Around 2012, some may remember talks of the consent order from the DEC on sewer overflows at the Oneida County Wastewater plant. In thirteen years, there has been 300 millions plus dollars of upgrades to the wastewater plant and pump station upgrades. The County has added a new sewer main going to the plant and miles of main repairs. Still in wet weather times, the County has had a few overflow occasions, they know there is ground water getting into the system through piping and sanitary sewer manholes. The County also has flow meters installed and are aware there is water coming from private homes with sub pump, foundation drains, and roof drains. In a meeting on 12/17/2024 the committee is working on a way to get more water out of the sanitary sewer station. If a resident knows they are pumping water into the sewer system, please contact the Highway Department for some suggestions on how to remove the water, an issue for every town going into the Oneida County Wastewater system.
